How to make DIY chalk paint

Hi there. Today I want to show you how to make DIY chalk paint.

If you’re a fan of the farmhouse style, then you’ve probably heard of chalk paint. It’s showing up everywhere because it’s really pretty and it’s so easy to use. The problem is it can be kind of expensive.

So today I’m going to show you a simple recipe for how to make your own. This can be used to cover reclaimed furniture without sanding it first because saving is the worst part of any DIY project. And it’s just a great way to add a touch of foreign farm style to any project that you’re working on.

To make your DIY chalk paint, you’re going to meet the plaster of paris water and flat latex paint.

So let’s get started.

To make it, we’re going to follow a recipe that has a really basic proportions:

• Third cup of gypsum (Plaster of Paris);
• Third cup of water;

They’re going to mix all of that together

• And then add one cup of latex paint.

You can any color of paint but choose a eggshell or water-based (latex) flat paint. You’ll get the best result with not a glossy finish like satin, semi-gloss, or hi-gloss paint.

This recipe will make enough to cover a three drawer dresser with one coat. Now we don’t need that much chalk paint today, so we’re going to cut this recipe in half. So to cut the recipe in half:

• Two tablespoons of water;
• Two tablespoons plus two teaspoons Plaster of Paris;
• Then we’re going to mix that with one half cup of paint.

You don’t want to use paint in any measuring cups that you’re going to be using in your kitchen with food. So a trick that I like to do is to measure out half a cup of water and pour it in a different container. Then Mark a line on that container.

So I’m going to have two tablespoons plus two teaspoons of plaster repairs. So I already had that learning doubt.

I can just add plaster of paris up and then I’m going to add two tablespoons plus two teaspoons of water.

Now we’re going to pour our paint up to the cup.

We’re going to add our plaster of paris to our paint and mix it well.
